Lal Bahadur Shashtri was the second Prime Minister of the country. He was the Prime Minister of India between 1963-1965. He was born in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. He was the second of three sons of his father Mr. Sharda Prasad of Mirzapur and his mother Mrs. Ramdulari Devi. His father Sharda Prasad was a poor teacher who later became a clerk at the revenue office. Shastriji also had two sisters. His father died during Shastriji's childhood. In 1928, he got married to Shri Ganesh Prasad's daughter Lalitadevi and had six children.
After completing his bachelor's degree, he joined the Bharat Sevak Sangh and began his political career here, taking a vow of national service. Shastriji was a pure Gandhian. He lived a life of simplicity and devoted his entire life to the service of the poor. He was involved in every important event of the Indian freedom struggle, and had to stay in jails, most notably the Non-Cooperation Movement of 1821 and the Satyagraha Movement of 1941. His political directors were Shri Purushottamdas Tandon, Pandit Govindballabh Pant, Jawaharlal Nehru and others. After coming to Allahabad on the 1929, he worked with Mr. Tandonji as the Secretary of the Allahabad unit of the Bharat Sevak Sangh. Here they met Nehru. Since then, his position has continued to grow. For example, he joined the Nehru cabinet as Home Minister. He held this post till 1951.
He was educated at Harishchandra High School and Kashi Vidyapeeth. It was from here that he received the title of "Shastri" which remained attached to his name for life.
In the year 1951, under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru, he was appointed General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee. He worked hard to make the Congress party win in the 1952, 1957 and 1962 elections.
After the death of the Prime Minister of India Shri Jawaharlal Nehru on May 27, 1964 during his tenure as the Prime Minister, Shastri took over as the Prime Minister on June 9, 1964.
Shastriji is faithfully remembered all over India for his simplicity, patriotism and sincerity. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in the year 1966.
He died on 11 January 1966 in Tashkant. His Samadhi is located in Delhi which is known as 'Vijayghat'.
